Bioinformatics Scientific Interest Group
The Bioinformatics SIG aims to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing among computational biologists across the NIH. The group also strives to provide a forum for researchers who have an interest in applying computational approaches to their own work to meet with experienced computational biologists, thereby establishing a network through which productive scientific collaborations can be fostered and encouraged. Topic areas include the computational aspects of functional and comparative genomics, systems biology, bioimaging, proteomics, structural modeling, and molecular dynamics. In addition, one of the main objectives of the group is to provide mentoring to trainees interested in bioinformatics on a peer-to-peer basis, to encourage their professional development.
One of the additional objectives of our group is to establish how to best convey information specifically to bioinformaticians. One aim is to share these findings as well as the adapted structure of this group with other organizations that specifically communicate with and facilitate communication among bioinformaticians.
The Bioinformatics SIG meets approximately once every quarter. Each meeting will feature talks that describe, in detail, bioinformatic methods used to answer specific biological questions. Invited speakers are encouraged to describe the process leading to the selection of specific methodologies or approaches that best-answer their biological questions of interest. Poster sessions will be incorporated into meetings on an occasional basis, to allow trainees to discuss their work and solicit feedback on their research findings.
