Faculty Development
Faculty development is one of the primary responsibilities of the Office of Intramural Research (OIR), focusing on supporting the professional growth and success of individuals pursuing faculty careers within the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP). The NIH IRP has three general categories of scientific faculty — Principal Investigator, Clinical, and Research.
Principal Investigator Faculty
Like the university professor, the IRP principal Investigator (PI) engages in research by leading a research group of trainees and other staff. PIs consist of Senior Investigator, Investigator, Senior Clinician, Senior Scientist, Assistant Clinical Investigator, and Independent Research Scholar. The Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE) and OIR offer a leadership and management course designed to enhance the mentoring skills of PIs and other faculty who teach and supervise trainees (in essence, a “Mentoring the Mentor” course). The current course schedule and recorded sessions from past courses are readily accessible at the following locations:
- 2024 OITE/OIR Professional Development Curriculum for NIH Faculty
- Previously Recorded Professional Development Sessions [NIH Only]

Clinical Faculty
The IRP Clinical Faculty primarily includes Staff Clinicians who, like their academic counterparts, engage in clinical care, research and scholarship, teaching and mentoring, and service. The NIH Staff Clinician Council provides various professional development resources to help Clinical Faculty excel in these areas.

Research Faculty
As members of the IRP Research Faculty, Staff Scientists are on the frontline of conducting the research and leading the core facilities essential to the NIH IRP mission. The NIH Staff Scientists Organization plays a key role in supporting the professional and career development of NIH’s research faculty.
Senior Advisors for Faculty Development
Many ICs have appointed a senior faculty member to be a Senior Advisor for Faculty Development whose role is to support the professional needs of their faculty. These senior advisors also work with OIR on NIH-wide faculty development issues and projects.
