Exercise Scientific Interest Group
The Exercise Interest Group (EIG) provides a forum where researchers, clinicians, and other interested persons from NIH and the extramural community can explore and promote epidemiological, clinical, and basic research on the effects of exercise in prevention and treatment of disease and disability. The EIG will be comprised of representatives from multiple NIH institutes and centers, including NHLBI, NIA, NIAMS, NIDDK, NCI, NIAID, NICHD, NCCIH, etc., plus representatives from the American College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological Society, and American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Specific goals of the EIG include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Stimulate inter-IC collaborations to develop innovative research programs/initiatives investigating the effects of habitual exercise in clinical medicine.
- Stimulate interest from the outside scientific community to submit research applications to NIH investigating the effects of exercise in prevention and treatment of disease and disability.
- Maintain a contemporary list of experts in exercise science to serve as potential NIH study section members and ad hoc grant reviewers.
- Provide a forum for outside organizations with expertise in exercise science to provide input and feedback to NIH regarding important issues in this area.
- Provide a forum for developing educational programs and lectures in exercise science to individuals in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.
