Deep Learning & AI in Biomedical Sciences Interest Group
Join us May 17 for the NIH Artificial Intelligence Symposium. Details below.
Biomedical science is in the early phase of a technological revolution, driven in large part by innovations in deep learning neural network architecture and availability of computational power. These cutting-edge techniques are being applied to every sub-field of the biological sciences, and with novel ground-breaking advancements arriving every week it is challenging for researchers to stay up to speed on what is available and possible.
The Deep Learning & AI in Biomedical Sciences Interest Group (DLABS SIG) aims to promote the awareness, understanding, and adoption of Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence approaches across the NIH. Rather than focus on a specific application or field of Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence, we aim to take a broad view with the idea that learning about many different applications of this technology will yield a deep understanding of how it works and facilitate cross-pollination between field. The group is intended for both experts and novices - we believe that everyone can find value in learning about and discussing a wide range of topics in this burgeoning field. Regular meetings are in the form of a weekly AI Journal Club and Seminar Series, where SIG members from various scientific backgrounds take turns leading a session on a topic of interest. We will also promote other Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence-related events to the listserv.

We are excited to announce our upcoming event, the NIH Artificial Intelligence Symposium. This day-long AI symposium will take place on May 17, 2024, in Masur Auditorium in Building 10 on the Bethesda NIH campus. This event is open to all NIH members; see registration and abstract submission at https://forms.microsoft.com/g/4WpdBXcEu6.
Keynote speakers James Zou, Ph.D. (Stanford) and Hari Shroff, Ph.D. (Janelia) will share their research, and also participate in a Panel Discussion on the present and future potential of AI in biomedical sciences. There will also be short talks and posters from researchers on campus who are developing or using AI approaches (abstract submission open until March 15th).
The NIH AI Symposium is sponsored by NHLBI, in partnership with the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES).
Important dates:
- March 15 – Abstract submission deadline
- April 5 – Abstract notifications (talk vs poster)
- May 3 – Registration deadline
- May 17 – Day of the event, Masur Auditorium (Building 10)
Questions can be directed to Lead Organizer Ryan O’Neill, Ph.D. (oneillrs@nih.gov).
Sign language interpreting and CART services are available upon request to participate in this event. Individuals needing either of these services and/or other reasonable accommodations should contact Ryan O’Neill (oneillrs@nih.gov) by May 3rd.
