Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Scientific Interest Group
The Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Scientific Interest Group (BHL-SIG) was created, in part, to address issues raised in the January 2011 U.S. Surgeon General “Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding” report, the product of two years of work by a federal steering committee representing many HHS entities including NICHD. The document called for increased research support for topics related to breastfeeding. As such, a diverse group of NIH scientists now gathers to learn about and discuss research gaps and needed studies related to breastfeeding.
Because of the life-course impact of breastfeeding, the issues on this topic are multi-institutional. Interested researchers may include (but not limited to):
NICHD: research in child nutrition; infant feeding; enhancing breastfeeding; understanding social and cultural barriers; studies to increase breastfeeding rates among low SES populations; lactation and women’s health issue; expressed milk & milk-banking issues.
NIDDK: breastfeeding and childhood and adult obesity; diabetes; food allergy
NHLBI: breastfeeding and asthma; allergic airway diseases; hypertension and coronary artery disease
NIAID: Breastfeeding and infectious diseases; AID/HIV positive and breastfeeding
NIMHD: Disparities in breastfeeding rates
NCI: Breastfeeding and maternal breast and uterine cancer
NIMH: Breastfeeding and maternal postpartum depression.
NCCIH: Complementary and integrative approaches for enhancing human milk production
NIDCD: Breastfeeding and reduction in otitis media and its complications,
NIDCR: Formula feeding and dental caries
NINR: Human milk feeding for very low birth weight infants; women’s health issues
ORWH: All issues related to women’s health
OBSSR: Breastfeeding and behavioral science issues
